Electric Car for Taxi in Poland 2026 — Worth It vs Hybrid and LPG?

TL;DR

An EV for Bolt or Uber is tempting: electricity cheaper than petrol, silence, no oil changes and a "Green" badge in the app. But a driver doing 1,500 km a week quickly discovers that whether an EV pays off depends almost entirely on where and at what price you charge. Charging at home or at the fleet depot for ~1.2 zł/kWh, an EV beats a hybrid by 250–300 zł a week. On public fast chargers at 3 zł/kWh it loses even to LPG and adds an hour of downtime per shift. Below we run the numbers on concrete, approximate 2026 market figures.

Real range in the city and in winter

The manufacturer quotes a WLTP range of 400–550 km, but a taxi does not drive a WLTP cycle. It drives with the A/C on, with a passenger, in traffic, and waits for the next job with the heating running. Roughly:

  • Summer, city: 300–400 km per charge at 16–20 kWh/100 km. A Tesla Model 3 / Y, BYD Seal or Hyundai Ioniq 5 realistically does 350–400 km; the smaller MG4 or BYD Dolphin 250–320 km.
  • Winter: −20–30% range. At −5°C, cabin and battery heating pushes consumption to 20–24 kWh/100 km. 350 km becomes 240–280 km, and a car without a heat pump loses even more. That covers one 10–12 h shift, but not two without a midday charge.
  • Driver handover = charging. A 12-hour shift in Warsaw is 250–350 km. One driver per car usually gets by with one charge a day; two drivers sharing a car need DC charging during the day or a second car.
  • Don't count to zero. The usable window is 10–90% of the battery — below 10% you are hunting for a charger instead of a job, and above 80% DC charging slows dramatically. In practice you plan around ~75% of capacity.
Rule of thumb: take the WLTP range and multiply by 0.7 in summer and 0.5 in winter — that is your working range with passengers and heating. For a "450 km WLTP" car that is 315 km in summer and ~225 km in January.

Charging: home / depot AC vs public DC and price per kWh

This is the most important section of the article. The same energy costs three times more or less depending on the socket (approximate, 2026):

  • Home / garage / fleet depot (AC 3–11 kW): ~1.0–1.3 zł/kWh. On the G12 night tariff a kWh comes to about 0.6–0.8 zł, on the flat G11 tariff about 1.0–1.1 zł, and a charger in the fleet car park usually 1.0–1.3 zł. A full 60 kWh battery = 60–80 zł. This is the scenario where an EV makes financial sense.
  • Public AC (11–22 kW): ~1.3–2.0 zł/kWh. Municipal chargers, shopping centres, car parks. Slow (4–6 h to 80%), but fine when you are parked anyway — e.g. overnight outside a block of flats without your own garage.
  • Public DC (50–350 kW): ~2.2–3.2 zł/kWh. Fast stations along main roads, at petrol stations, at network operators. 10–80% in 25–45 min, but a full battery costs 130–190 zł — more than a tank of LPG for twice the distance.
  • Subscriptions and fleets. Some operators sell kWh bundles at 15–30% off, and fleets have contracts with the networks. Ask the fleet about a charging card before signing — it changes the whole calculation.
Chargers in the city — the 2026 reality. Warsaw has the densest network (several hundred points, including DC on the outskirts and at shopping centres), but there can be a queue in the centre at peak times. Kraków and Wrocław have good DC coverage on the exit roads, weaker in the strict centre. In the Tricity and Poznań the network is enough for one charge a day, but not two. In smaller cities, an EV without your own socket or a fleet depot is a lottery.

Time lost charging and how drivers plan for it

In a hybrid you refuel every 3–4 days in 5 minutes. In an EV you charge every day — the question is whether during time you would have lost anyway, or instead of a job:

  • Overnight AC charging: 0 minutes lost. The car charges while you sleep. In the morning you have 90% and start the shift. Requires your own socket, a garage or a fleet depot with chargers — worth asking about when choosing a car.
  • DC charging during the shift: 30–60 minutes. One 20→80% top-up at a 100+ kW station is 25–35 minutes plus the detour and a possible queue. At 60–70 zł/h net earnings that is 30–70 zł lost per day — 150–350 zł a week that never shows up on the electricity bill.
  • Charging during breaks. Experienced drivers combine charging with lunch, prayer, paperwork — between 1 and 3 pm, when there are fewer jobs anyway. They pick chargers at petrol stations and restaurants, not "in the desert".
  • Apps. You plan the network in the operator's app (availability, power, price) and in charger-map aggregators — checking that the bay is free and working before driving there. A few minutes of planning in the morning saves an hour during the day.
Count time as money. If you must DC-charge mid-shift 5 days a week, add ~250 zł a week of lost earnings to the electricity cost. It is the most commonly omitted line in "an EV is cheaper" calculations. More on the full cost structure: all the costs of a Bolt/Uber driver.

Energy cost per 100 km and per week: EV vs hybrid vs LPG

We calculate for a full-time driver, ~1,500 km a week, early-September 2026 prices (petrol ~7.8 zł/l, LPG ~2.95 zł/l — petrol jumped by over a zloty after the government price-cap package expired on 31 August 2026):

  • EV at 18 kWh/100 km. Home/depot charging (1.2 zł/kWh): ~22 zł/100 km → ~325 zł/week. AC/DC mix (average ~2.0 zł/kWh): ~36 zł/100 km → ~540 zł/week. Mostly DC (3.0 zł/kWh): ~54 zł/100 km → ~810 zł/week. Add 15–25% in winter.
  • Hybrid (Toyota Corolla / Camry) at 5 l/100 km. ~39 zł/100 km → ~585 zł/week. Very predictable, no planning, +5–10% in winter.
  • LPG (Skoda Octavia, Dacia Logan) at 9.5 l/100 km. ~28 zł/100 km → ~420 zł/week plus a few litres of petrol for cold starts. The cheapest fuel per km if you have no cheap electricity — but LPG cars are usually older and standard class.
  • The numbers in short. An EV with cheap charging saves ~260 zł/week vs a hybrid and ~95 zł vs LPG. An EV on DC overpays ~225 zł/week vs a hybrid and loses time on top. Between those extremes is the mix — and that is where the game is played.
The 2.2 zł/kWh rule. At ~18 kWh/100 km an EV costs the same in fuel as a hybrid when your average kWh price is around 2.1–2.2 zł. Above that line the EV is more expensive in energy; below it, cheaper. Each week simply calculate: average kWh price × 18 × 15.

The verdict in one sentence: an EV wins clearly when you charge at home or at the depot, comes out roughly level with a hybrid on public AC, and is the most expensive option on DC alone; a hybrid is the safest choice with no conditions attached; LPG gives the lowest cost per km, but in an older car and without platform perks. EV rent premium, wear and platform perks

Electricity is not the only line that separates an EV from a combustion car. Three things that change the week's result:

  • Rent premium: +100–250 zł/week. An EV costs the fleet more to buy and insure, so the rent is higher than for a hybrid of the same class (Tesla Model 3 vs Corolla: ~1,000–1,100 zł vs ~750–850 zł). That premium eats most of the electricity savings unless you charge cheaply. Some fleets, however, rent EVs cheaper when they charge them at the depot themselves.
  • Brakes and tyres. Regeneration means brake pads in an EV last 2–3 times longer — a plus for the fleet, not for you, unless your contract shares servicing costs. Tyres, on the other hand, wear faster (mass and torque): check who pays for replacement and whether the mileage cap in the contract is lower than for a combustion car.
  • Bolt Green / Uber Green. An EV automatically lands in the "Green" category — passengers who pick it are often business clients, and in some cities Green has a slightly higher rate or priority. Realistically that is a few percent more jobs, not a revolution.
  • Comfort / Premium. New EVs (Tesla Model 3/Y, Ioniq 5, Seal) usually meet Comfort requirements — a higher rate per km and passengers who do not haggle. Check the year and class requirements in car requirements for Bolt/Uber.
Ask the fleet three things: (1) does it have its own chargers and what does it charge per kWh, (2) who pays for tyres and after how many km, (3) is the car registered for Comfort / Green. Popular EVs in Polish fleets in 2026

Bolt/Uber fleets buy EVs that are cheap to run, have a good service network and charge quickly. You will most often see:

  • Tesla Model 3 / Model Y — the king of Comfort/Premium. Real range 350–420 km, 250 kW DC charging, its own Supercharger network with predictable prices. Rent ~1,000–1,200 zł/week, the most Comfort jobs in Warsaw and Kraków.
  • MG4, BYD Dolphin — budget compacts. Range 250–320 km in summer, 180–230 in winter; enough for one shift. Rent ~800–900 zł. Standard class, Green yes, Comfort usually not.
  • BYD Seal, Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, Kia Niro EV, Hyundai Kona Electric — the middle ground. Range 320–400 km, fast charging (Ioniq 5/6 at 800 V — 18 min 10→80%), often Comfort-eligible. Rent ~900–1,050 zł.
  • VW ID.3 / ID.4, Toyota bZ4X — rarer in fleets because they cost more to buy for similar performance; they show up at larger fleets with their own charging depot. The bZ4X trades on trust in Toyota but charges slower than Hyundai/Kia.

Who an EV suits and who should stay on a hybrid

There is no single answer — there is a driver profile. Check which one you recognise yourself in:

  • An EV makes sense when: you have your own socket / garage or the fleet charges at the depot for ≤1.3 zł/kWh; you drive one shift a day (up to 300 km); you work in a big city with a dense DC network as a fallback; you aim for Comfort / Green and business clients.
  • Stay on a hybrid when: you would charge mostly publicly; the car runs two shifts or 2,000+ km a week; you work in a smaller city or a lot outside the city; you want zero planning and a cost predictable to the złoty.
  • LPG for those who: want the lowest rent and the lowest fuel cost per km, accept an older standard-class car and no access to Comfort. It is still the cheapest way to start — especially in cities where standard rates are strong.
  • The in-between option — a plug-in hybrid. 40–60 km on electricity from an overnight charge, the rest on petrol. No range stress, part of the EV savings. Rare in fleets, but worth asking.
A one-week test. Before signing a months-long contract, take an EV for 7 days (some fleets offer this) and record: km driven, kWh and złoty spent on charging, minutes lost at the charger. If the weekly energy cost + lost earnings is under ~580 zł — the EV pays off. If over — hybrid. Numbers, not marketing.
